Sony TV Division Struggling

The Verge and Chris Welch have coverage of Sony's struggling TV division:

[Sharp and Samsung]...have fared notably better than Sony, which since 2003 will have sunk $8.5 billion into its troubled TV division by the time fiscal year 2011 comes to a close. The brand once synonymous with home electronics is stumbling, but perhaps a "different" approach to the smart TV will be enough to bring better fortune.

 

Voice Recognition for TV in 2012?

Peter Burrows and Cliff Edwards over at Business Week have news of the TV industry wanting to add voice control to their sets:

Microsoft is already there, via its Xbox 360 game console, and Comcast, Samsung Electronics, LG, and Sharp are working on voice-enabled features for TV sets, set-top boxes, and related products. Mike Thompson, senior vice-president at Nuance Communications, the world’s largest supplier of voice recognition technology, says “a wave” of device makers will ship products that understand voice commands next year.

 

DirecTV HR34 on Dec 8th?

Richard Lawler over at Engadget brings us news about the new DirecTV HR34:

After waiting years for someone to deliver the first RVU-capable multiroom DVR setup, info leaked to SatelliteGuys indicates we only have to hold out one more week for DirecTV's HR34 DVR. While DirecTV has yet to make an official announcement, retailer info states that it will be available starting Thursday for just $99 after rebate ($399 rack rate), bringing five tuners, 1TB of storage, whole home DVR service in up to four active rooms, and more.
